Installation to Improve the Data Center

DTE Energy

Company

As a Detroit-based company, DTE Energy works to develop and manage the energy needs of businesses and services across the country. With 2.2 million customers counting on DTE for electric utility and another 1.3 million for natural gas, the company is one of Michigan’s most prominent corporations for growth and success.

Scenario

When DTE Energy needed assistance with physically installing, configuring, and testing two Nexus switches in their vendor’s Minneapolis data center, they sought help from AHEAD. Our engineers have a deep expertise with these switches, so DTE knew they could count on AHEAD to get the job done.

Solution

  • DTE partnered with AHEAD for a Discovery and Design, during which our experts created a pre-installation questionnaire to identify standard operational settings for devices.
  • AHEAD discussed northbound connectivity requirements with DTE staff and the vendor’s infrastructure team and created a basic network design diagram for the switches, hosts, and upstream connectivity

Technical

  • Rack and cable two (2) Nexus 93108TC-EX switches
  • Upgraded/downgraded Nexus 93108TC-EX switches operating software
  • Applied initial configuration to bring Nexus 93108TC-EX switches into Virtual Port-Channel (VPC) domain
  • Applied port level configurations for Dell servers as determined by DTE’s VMware design
  • Up to two ports per VDS
  • Connected Nexus 93108TC-EX switches to the routed northbound network using configuration settings determined during the design phase
  • Configured inter-vlan routing for up to 20 VLANs
  • Tested and Accepted
  • Created and performed a Test and Acceptance Plan with the Nexus 93108TC-EX switches to validate resiliency, redundancy, reporting, and overall health.
